Creative Lessons to Try in the Classroom

Hi there, Member,
Hope you're enjoying your three-day weekend! We've got three Common Core-aligned lesson ideas to try on Tuesday, so you can spend more time relaxing and less time planning over the holiday. Each of the concepts in the videos can be tied into MLK Day of Service, but they'll also work year round!

These lessons will push your students' thinking around textual evidence and deepen their analysis of texts.

Text Graffiti
Spread quotes from Dr. King around the room, and let students leave their mark.

Small Group Writing
Dr. King once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" Students work in twos or threes to discuss and analyze.

Interactive Stations
Students write, discuss, and create a tableau to discover the central idea of a text like Dr. King's I Have a Dream[pdf] speech.

Let us know how you adapted these lessons for your classroom by adding your comments to the discussion area of each video page. Have a great week!
