Notes from the Tch Laureates

"Ms. DeBose, I need to meditate.” These were words I heard from a former student during my prep period. I asked her what was going on and she shared that some of her peers were bad-mouthing her because of a decision she’d made. It had gotten to the point where she was starting to believe the negative things they were saying. We processed the situation and then we sat for a short three-minute meditation. Those three minutes were one of the best gifts we could have received. Once the chime went off and we opened our eyes, my student said, “I feel so peaceful now.” I did too.

Our work of teaching and learning can be physically and emotionally taxing, especially during this time of year when high-stakes exams and the end of the year are quickly approaching. It’s essential that we take time to care for ourselves and help our students do the same. This week Anne Mechler shares how she helps her students practice mindfulness in the classroom and we’ll learn how fellow Teaching Channel Laureate Crystal Morey’s #TchStressAway campaign helped teachers across the country — including me! — reduce stress in their lives. We’ve got to take care of ourselves and this week’s resources will help us do just that.
