Notes from the Tch Laureates

If, like me, you had an English teacher for a mother and a Sunday school teacher for a father, the skill of reading was probably emphasized every day. You're also likely to have had the blessing of access to quality literature. My life story included two great parents, three great siblings, and hundreds of books. I will never forget reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe on my bedroom floor, and literally feeling cold when Lucy reached through the wardrobe into the snow-filled world of Narnia. It gives me chills just writing about it. This skill of reading started off as incidental to my environment, but as an African-American male, it became vital to my mental emancipation. One’s freedom is complemented by an ability to understand the world of words. Reading has changed my life. Many years later, I sit in a house that is literally peopled with books – they are like friends to me now. And now, my son is being raised by an English teacher who introduces him to the wonders of literature. It’s a privilege to give the gift of reading to my son, his mind changing with each page of a book. And so I’m thrilled that Tch is helping provide eBooks to any child who wants or needs them as part of a Billion eBook Gift campaign. Find out how you, and the parents, guardians, and children you work with can take advantage.
