October is National Bullying Prevention Month, when we’re encouraged to examine the issue and the ways that we, as a society, might reduce and eventually eliminate bullying and cyberbullying. Having spent most of my career as a middle school teacher, I’ve seen the negative impact that bullying can have on students. Feelings of sadness, depression, and anger can become overwhelming when students are isolated or abused.

I’ve found much value in reducing or eliminating teacher sarcasm and encouraging honest discussions where adults help students process their emotions within a safe learning environment. When we maintain a safe and respectful classroom, bullying behaviors abate as students no longer feel validated in their negative actions. It’s important to begin with empathy as we work to build our students' resilience and sense of belonging. This month, I encourage you to choose your words carefully as you encourage acceptance, love, and unity in your learning spaces.
