Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a restful break. It’s now time to get back into our teaching and learning routines. Does your routine allow time for students to talk in class? Not just chatter — I’m talking about giving students time for academic conversations and discussions. This month Tch is focused on English language learners. Allowing ELLs the opportunity to express themselves orally is tremendous. Not only will they have a better understanding of the language but they will gain confidence in themselves and begin to excel in all subject areas.

There are many ways to provide the opportunity for academic conversations in your classroom. I especially like Socratic seminar because students independently question and discuss literature, largely without my interference.
