Tips to engage young people in summer reading and writing.

Summer is on the horizon. The excitement is palatable for both students and teachers looking forward to a little bit of downtime. But, for me, the arrival of summer comes with two goals: keeping my own children learning and engaged to prevent the “summer slide,” and intentionally carving out time for quiet reflection to refill my own energy tank.

As I order professional books for my summer reading and research camps for my kiddos, I'm also looking to community resources to provide my children with access to activities during the summer. This week, Gretchen Vierstra explores five ways you can encourage your students to keep their reading and writing skills sharp throughout the summer. And as I relax, unwind, and read, I’ll also set time aside to purge and organize my teaching materials so I can begin next year with a clean space. As you read I Want to Get Better at… Organization Next Year, think about your own organization and how you can improve on it for a fresh start next school year. The time you spend now on summer learning — for you and your students — with a focus on personal organization, will pay off with a successful start come fall.
