Notes from the Tch Laureates

A few months ago, a friend asked what I thought was the biggest difference between the Next Generation Science Standards and the previous iteration of science standards. Without hesitation, I replied the emphasis on engineering practices. If you think about it, it is such an exciting time to be a science teacher:

  • Problem solving and critical thinking are now working their way back into the mainstream, even in kindergarten.
  • Instead of darken one circle completely:
    • there can be degrees of correctness
    • it’s okay that there is more than one correct answer
    • sometimes students even have to deal with the consequences of trade-offs
    • all of the above (This is the correct answer!)
  • Corporate funders and non-profits are working together to generate free, cutting-edge curriculum to address the needs of educators. See: Tch’s Science and Innovation curriculum series.
  • Technology allows us to respond to the high interest in engineering design. Shameless plug: as part of Engineers Week, fellow Tcher Jessica Levine and I will host a #TchLIVE Twitter chat Feb. 25th focusing on engineering in the K-12 classroom. Hope to see you there.
  • Last but not least, it’s an exciting time because we are in it together! We have this wonderful community where we can help each other grow and enjoy this shift in practice.
Happy Engineering,
