Notes from the Tch Laureates

Teaching is such a delicate craft. We work to support students, but not give them all the answers. We want to push our students to succeed, but also create space for them to push themselves. We hope to create independent thinkers, but often need to give them the steps to get them there. I don’t know about you, but every day I am challenged to find this delicate balance.

This week’s focus on Teaching Channel Laureate and 2014 National Teacher of the Year Sean McComb reminds me that I’m not the only one with this struggle. Sean’s Getting Better Together work on personalized learning is insightful and inspiring. In his blog post introducing three new videos featuring his practice, Sean shares his process for customizing feedback and instruction and lessons he’s learned along the way. His video Making Feedback Meaningful left me feeling renewed, and I'll be able to use the specific strategies he shared in my middle school classroom. It’s clear that Sean is an incredibly thoughtful and reflective practitioner, which is probably one of the many reasons he was selected as the National Teacher of the Year. It’s not every day that we get to be inside the head of such an accomplished educator. Luckily for us, this week we do!
