When I self-reflect, I think about three things: my thought process going into a lesson, what I observe as I watch students during a lesson, and what my takeaways are after the lesson. Often, I return to the same lesson, adjusting and perfecting it, using each year’s new insights to influence how I plan for the next. It’s clear to me that self-reflection is one of the most critical components of teacher practice when it comes to instructional growth.

This week, Sarah Brown Wessling makes the invisible visible by giving us a peek into her self-reflection on some of her most popular videos that many of us have used as a model for improving our own practice. In taking a fresh look at these lessons, she provides a new layer of depth as she describes the context and thinking behind her process. Sarah’s Tcher’s Cut videos are an example of one strategy you can use to return to your practice, ask the tough questions, and discover the hidden lesson that awaits. Enjoy!
