Notes from the Tch Laureates

When I think back on my college experience, one of my most profound moments occurred when I had to videotape myself teaching a class. I remember watching the result and thinking that I said “um” a lot. I also noticed that there were many ways in which I could improve my practice. In order to garner feedback, I offered to share my video with my fellow student teachers.

Critique, even if constructive, from one’s peers is never easy. However, that and similar experiences with video have proved invaluable over the course of my career. When I was introduced to Teaching Channel two years ago, I was amazed by the vast amount of video resources. I also remember wishing that a more collegial experience was available on the site. There are few things as powerful as breaking down an instructional video with other growth-minded educators.

Working as a team, discussing practice, strategies, and even studying micro-moves are all examples of this collaborative exercise. This is the reason I’m super excited about the launch of Video Lounge. Tch videos will be posted in such a way that we’ll be able to discuss specific teaching moments, leading to opportunities for professional growth by the entire viewing community. But instead of having to meet in a college classroom or at a district PD office, we can meet online, in a virtual teacher’s lounge. Join the fun and tell your colleagues about #TchVideoLounge. I am truly looking forward to learning and growing with all of you!
