Life is about balance — work and family, ups and downs, excitement and calm. Balance in the classroom is just as important, especially when we consider how we give and receive feedback. If we receive overwhelmingly positive feedback, we may not see a need for growth. On the contrary, too much negative feedback may result in feelings of defensiveness and a tendency to shut down. Similarly, when giving feedback, we need to strike a balance between praise and suggestions for growth in order for the recipient to be willing to listen, while also improving their product. This week Tch Laureate Marion Ivey takes us inside her kindergarten classroom to see how she teaches her students to give and receive feedback on their writing in a balanced and effective manner. As you watch this video, think about your own balance and your steps toward achieving it.
