Listening to students explain their thinking and analyzing their written work are two of my favorite things about teaching. It’s at these times I'm able to see the amazing things students know or places they may be struggling, and I can adjust my planning and teaching accordingly.

Assessment is not something that only happens at the end of a lesson or a unit. This listening, observing, and adjusting is ongoing, formative, and quite simply, teaching. I cannot imagine a day of teaching where I was not formatively assessing my students. This is why I am so excited to see Teaching Channel launch their Formative Assessment Deep Dive as a collection of new ideas to help us get a better understanding of what students know and how we can build on these ideas.
