As a teacher, I often reflect on the barriers to access for students. Over the years, I’ve wrestled with many of these obstacles and worked to create an equitable classroom by providing differentiated support based on student need. However, in looking at data and through student observation, I’ve often been unsuccessful in reaching my English Language Learners. This is why I’m excited to continue to grow as I engage with the new video series launching on Teaching Channel this week. 5 Essential Practices for Teaching ELLs is centered around meeting the needs of all students, especially our ELLs. In this series with the San Francisco Unified School District, you’ll find many of the teaching practices I hold dear to my heart, specifically the benefits of co-teaching and collaboration. You’ll also see strategies for academic vocabulary development and partner talk that are sure to help all students succeed.

As you engage with these videos and blog posts, think about one take-away that could make an impact in your classroom. As you implement this idea, consider how it’s elevating all learners and removing those barriers to access.
