Non-cognitive/meta-cognitive assessments

We've debated the incorporation of non-cognitive/metacognitive variables in our grades. But we have not figured out how to explicitly teach those types of skills (grit, resilency, etc) or assess them. Have you moved toward this school of thought? Do you know how to teach or assess it? How?
