Mr. Popper's Penguins was a big hit!
I love the suggestions below! I would add:
More picture books:
-When Marian Sang: The True Recital Of Marian Anderson, The Voice Of A Century by Pam Munoz Ryan and Brian Selznick
-Dancing in the Wings by Debbie Allen
-Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez by Kathleen Krull
-The Colors of Us by Karen Katz
-Anything by Leo Lionni or Eric Carle
-The Relatives Came by Cynthia Rylant
-A Bad Case of the Stripes by David Shannon
More chapter books:
-Winnie the Pooh (the original by A.A. Milne)
-The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
-The BFG by Roald Dahl (again might need some editing)

I have so many favorite read alouds for 1st grade! Here are a few... let me know if you need more. I also can't wait to see what other Tchers suggest!
Ish by Peter H. Reynolds
The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds
The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
Unlovable by Dan Yacarrino
I'm Gonna Like Me by Jamie Lee Curtis
Judy Moody series
Flat Stanley series
James & the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl
Matilda by Roald Dahl (needs a little editing for young kids, but is my #1 favorite... love it so much I named my daughter after it!)
All the Kevin Henkes books like Chrysanthemum, Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, Sheila Rae the Brave, Kitten's Full Moon, and all the rest of the picture books he has written. All are perfect for 1/2. From other authors I love Enemy Pie, Recess Queen, Ramona (Beverly Cleary), Trevor's Wiggly-Wobbly Tooth.
I love "Don't Fidget A Feather" You can google for lesson plans to complement the read-aloud. It is a great one for teaching theme, for dramatization, for discussions...choosing when not to take a dare, etc.
Taught 1st grade for six years and agree with the posts that are here. There are also exemplar read aloud texts suggested by grade level in Appendix B of the Common Core State Standards along with tasks for each text. You might want to take a look at that list too. Go to corestandards.org and look at the printable standards.
