Hi all, I am planning to create some Valentine's Day activities for my second graders that incorporate either math or ELA. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Another idea that I've done in the past is conversation heart poetry. Kids get conversation hearts and have to construct poems using them as the basis. It's a lot of fun!

I always have my students fill out a "lunch questionnaire" answering questions about their favorite lunchtime foods. Then, I randomly pass the questionnaires out to the members of the class. The class makes lunch on Valentine's Day for their Secret Valentine and in return, gets a lunch from their Secret Valentine. I encourage the students to "decorate" the lunch in a fun, festive bag for their Valentine to make it more fun. It's a lot of fun and a good way to incorporate some character education into your curriculum as you talk about friendship and caring for others. Have fun!

One of the most inspirational activities our class did was when we made cards for US servicemen overseas that were along the lines of a Hallmark card that they could give to one another. We divided up the cards into different categories such as a Valentine's Day: sonnet, haiku, limerick, free verse, acrostic, ballad, etc. There were categories for each level of student. Our most visual students drew pictures, and our most advanced even made a villanelle. .
Each student made about 15-20 cards and we sent about 800 cards in total. We even put suggested prices on them with no one being more than 50 cents.
