Paulette- Sometimes students are hard to keep on task because they aren't engaged. Maybe you could pull the student aside to ask what he is interested in and plan a lesson that plays to his interests and his strengths. Sometimes this is all that students need to realize that they are valued and that you really care about him doing well in school. As Linda said, sometimes there is so much going on at home, so students need to look forward to their time at school. Have him work with you to make class awesome. If he has a leadership role, he may be more invested in the learning environment.
