I am looking for an engaging project driven unit for intermediate age which focuses more on reading skills not STEM. Something other than research and report/presentation/...

During a non-fiction reading unit, my students worked in research groups knowing that at the end of the unit, they would be teaching a "course" on their topic to a second grade classroom. To get rev'd up for this, we watched videos of students doing the same task through Columbia Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project.

I've also done projects where kids created newspapers at the end of a reading unit. For example, a 4th grade unit on fables, folktales, and tall tales culminated in students creating a newspaper with articles they wrote about the exploits of their characters, advertisements for items they believed their characters would need, etc.

Hi Michael. Are you looking for some ideas for an end product or an entire unit? What skills/strategies are you hoping students will gain?

I think that an end product is most motivating for them as they see the results. I work with a rather unmotivated group and the more the skills are embedded in projects the usually the better.

Other than STEM based projects we have also worked on research and presentations a lot...

I am less worried about specific skills since once I have the project in mind should be able to work in comprehension, summarizing, note taking...
