Try The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho or try Night by Elie Wiesel. I'm not an ELA teacher; however, both these novels are written at a lower reading level but require a higher maturity level.

WITNESS by Hesse is in poem format, deals with racism in the 1920's.

This book is wonderful due to it's using point of view in a straight forward manner and has so much more in-depth with issues and people/society to discuss with students. Students get caught up in the story line and characters.

        Good luck,
