The ruler postulate is just a way of stating that you can use numbers assigned to a straight line to measure length or distance. On a number line, every point can be paired with a number and every number can be paired with a point. Generally you start with zero as one end (point) and equally spaced ascending numbers until the end. For teaching this you can can give each student a strip of blank paper and have them create their own units and then compare to inches and centimeters to measure something.
