Question Detail

Book recommendations for struggling readers?

Nov 3, 2014 10:19am

I currently teach 7th graders and they are required to individually read 3 books a semester to discuss in their literature circle groups. Some of my 7th graders are struggling to read at their grade level, however. There's also the problem of nothing sounding "interesting." They tell me everything sounds "boring" or "stupid." Most of these students are boys, so maybe the problem is I'm not finding books that these boys can identify with. What are some good books that my struggling 7th grade boys can read, but aren't too easy? I still want them to challenge themselves!

What about comic books or graphic novels? There are often dozens of interesting ones that are not too text heavy, yet interesting and could be read by a variety of levels.
