Common Core for 9th English (Pre AP)

We wish to have our students demonstrate their ability to write an appropriate narrative essay. How should a prompt be worded, and what are we looking for to assess the paper? Is there a rubric for this activity? Thank you!

      If you were to look at he exemplars on the Common Core State Standards website, you will see in their expectations of standards for 9th grade such as :

      introduces the topic.
      • organizes complex ideas, concepts, and information to make important connections and distinctions.
      • develops the topic with well‐chosen,relevant, and sufficient facts, extended definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples appropriate to the audience’s knowledge oft he topic.
      • uses appropriate and varied transitions to link the major sections of the text, create cohesion, and clarify the relationships among complex ideas and concepts.
      • uses precise language and domain‐specific vocabulary to manage the complexity of the topic.
      • establishes and maintains a formal style and objective tone while attending to the norms and conventions of the discipline in which the student is writing.
      • provides a concluding section that follows from and supports the information or explanation presented.
      • demonstrates exemplary command of the conventions of standard written English

      You can easily construct a rubric simply from what they offer on their website if you include three bands of: at standard, exceeds standards, does not meet standards.
