For next school year, I have looked at ways to ensure that I am still covering the required PASS standards as I teach the Common Core Standards. It is a challenge to incorporate both standards and to ensure that the students won't experience gaps in their learning. The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) site is a good resource for discovering student learning will be assessed in the future.

A group of teachers began working on aligning our district curriculum with the standards last year. We came up with a series of "I Can" statements gleaned from the standards. These are kid-friendly statements that represent the unpacked standards. We are now having these "I Cans" printed and laminated in poster form for teacher to display in the classroom. They will be used to help kids understand what they are learning and for teachers to help them focus their lessons. We will be using the posters to introduce the standards and guide our district implementation efforts but mainly they will be a teacher tool.

In Curriculum and Instruction we are working with teachers to understand the standards as a unit as opposed to an set of grouped standards.

            Dear Katie,
Thanks for your response! At the end of each week, my kindergarten class looks at the Reading Foundation Skills we worked on and get excited to see they have met the standard.

I agree Katie! That is how we have done it as well. Common Core is so much more "in depth" and it covers all of PASS for Language Arts (the subject I teach). I find that with the deeper thinking Common Core creates, that we are far better off. We embraced it with OPEN ARMS!

I have searched the internet for lots of resources. Everything I have found and used in my classroom, I have kept copies of ina notebook. At the end of this year, I plan to review, revise and rethink.

I've been using the internet to search for resources to help with my own understanding of common core.
