Do you assess Word of the Day?

Jun 19, 2013 5:14pm

I've been reading a lot on Vocabulary instruction, learning about tiers, academic, content vocabulary, etc. I still don't have a grasp on how to teach it and how to assess. One every day, or Wordly Wise-way -have activities every day and assessment at the end of the week.

In my experience, the most effective way to assess vocab is to use a Word Wall, where all the words you use throughout the year are on a bulletin board. Then, on every assignment throughout the year, require students to use X number of the words in their assignments. Students need to see and use the words repeatedly to "own" them, so reviewing them throughout the year and making the words a part of your own language and your class culture will help them move beyond simply memorizing the words.

      Good luck!

Katie - Thank you for your sharing your ideas on assessing vocabulary words. I can do a word wall, but I need a more systematic approach to assessing it..
