Question Detail

Do you know a short activity for students at snack

Jul 6, 2013 4:58am

We are trying something new this year. We are taking too much time with snack (kindergarten) so we want to create an activity or something to do while snack is going on. That way learning does not stop. Only a 12 minutes long activity. Any suggestions?

When I taught 2nd grade (millions of years ago) I would provide treats on Friday. The snack might be something like goldfish crackers, animal crackers, or cereal. The students would solve math problems with them, or use them to "illustrate" a story problem. Every minute or so, I would instruct them to eat one or two. By the time we were done with math, so was their snack.

We have had a free fruit and veggie grant the last two years and wow has it cut into our time! I use that time to read a chapter book because it can be stopped just about anywhere and kept for the next day. I tried a picture book but it was not as easy to find stopping points
Another idea is to do silent matching games with number cards and dots. A puppet moves the card and to match the dots on the magnetic white board and the class does thumbs up if the puppet got it right and thumbs down if the puppet (you) got it wrong. No one gets upset because there are not teams...just them and the puppet.
This way they are not talking and can eat and watch/participate.
