I think it's great practice to ask teachers to examine the Common Core standards before asking Essential Questions. In my own PD, I've found that many teachers have amazing lessons that don't quite fit with the Common Core. Beginning by looking at the standards can help teachers to determine whether or not to move ahead with implementation of a lesson. When you begin with the essential question, sometimes it's possible to "tweek" a question to make it seem like their is alignment to Common Core when in fact there is not.

Once teachers examine the standards, I have them use the language in the standard to develop an essential question. This is a great way to introduce standards-based curriculum design and helps both teachers and students to focus on college and career ready skills.
