This sounds like a perfect spot to interject science and engineering! A suggestion would be to begin with simple science activities whereas the students predict, observe, and then make inferences/reflect. You could even progress to the point whereas they are creating engineering design journals similar to the ones seen here: https://www.teachingchannel.org/blog/2015/12/11/engineering-design/
