I've always used read alouds in the content area. I've collected a variety of materials (books, articles, poems) to correlate with our social studies concepts , science and math too. Students respond to story especially!

I also make sure to include writing in all areas. So for example this week students will write a historical journal entry from the point of view as a canal worker or passenger from 1800's.

Using primary sources has been very successful when embedding literacy. For example using receipts and accounting ledgers for math.

I found a great resource at the ISTE conference this summer called ActivelyLearn [http://www.activelylearn.com/] that allows you to embed questions into a text, have students answer, then comment on each others' statements. It would be rgeat for any subject area, and it promotes collaboration.

I agree with Natalie. Use of primary resources to provide evidence to support arguments in science.

If you are in secondary science or social studied, the Common Core literacy standards are an awesome tool for delivering your content while also promoting literacy. You can read the standards here if your school hasn't yet implemented the framework.

              Hope this helps!

I use a word wall for all of the subjects I taught. I think using your contents vocabulary is the easiest way to incorporate literacy into other subject areas.

All good responses. THinking back on all that you do, will probably give you more to celebrate in this area than you think!
