      Hi Amber,
These 2 threads have lots of fun ideas for ice breakers and community building activities. Hope you find something that helps!

I always ask students to write me a letter about why they should be my favorite students. It gives you a quick diagnostic about their writing ability and it also introduces you to their hobbies, interests, etc...

It really depends on what needs to get done that first few days. Ideally, I'd be going over the course syllabus within a few minutes while I pass out their textbooks while students wait patiently and well behaved. But those days are gone. So I try to send a message that I mean busines. If books are ready (or not)for distribution, I have a survey (pre-assessment) activity that I have my students do. Questions range from the academic to something more personal. I use this quiet time getting to know their names and getting a sense about each one. Trying to learn their names in the 1st 20 to 30 mins is daunting. I just do so because of my OCD. After that, I show my power point presentation that itemizes my expectations. At one time, I quiz them on the rules I talk with them about. But I can't seem to access that quiz on word and/or ppt. Mind you, all this is for students in middle to high school. It would be great if I can get the kids to do some get-to-know-each-other activity but because I'll be in a private school, they already know each other before they were born.
