Have you thought about teaching shadows by using phases of the moon/solar and lunar eclipses? You could start by measuring/charting the length of a students shadow at different times throughout the day. Maybe talk about sundials as well? Then you could build upon that experiment by teaching them basic astronomy- They could observe the moon over the course of a lunar cycle. Just an idea....
If I may suggest this as a GREAT and exciting way to introduce shadows to your students:
After you've hooked them and had them watch, I would ask some good "previewing the material" questions such as
"Where is the light source, in front of the dancers or behind them? What happens when they move away from the light? Toward it? What is causing them to look bigger and smaller?"
Then pass out some flashlights and let them play around with shadow puppets. THEN once they are starting to understand the concepts, take them into astronomy land and go to TOWN with some deep Science ;-)
