Hello, the scientific method is not a big focus of the Next Generation Science Standards that many of the states in the United States have adopted; but, it is still a critical component to encourage students to think like a scientist and focus on controlling variables in a science classroom. I think your students would get a lot of valuable experience from designing their own laboratory experiences and then thinking through all of the things that could go wrong. I like to have students challenge one another to design the best experiment that their peers cannot undo. I hope that helps.
