I think rubrics are always practical, especially when you can teach students how to assess themselves or their peers and monitor their own progress. A rubric allows you to make expectations clear to the class so they can create proficient work. Having that many students makes it difficult to answer a lot of individual questions about your expectations, so the more information you can give them up front, the better. You may have to pre-teach the language of the rubric a couple of times, but once they understand how it is used, they can refer back to it often when they have a question about an assignment.
