When you're grading writing, consider doing a focused correction on only one trait of writing instead of spending all the time editing every aspect of the paper. For example, if you're only looking for word choice, you can ask students to highlight the ten words they are proud of assess those. Also, you can ask students to peer review each other's work on formative assessments, and do informal writing workshops, so you only have to grade the summative.
