Question Detail

How do I structure an 8th grade autobiography unit?

Mar 2, 2014 5:08pm

I'm beginning a unit with my 8th graders next week and although I have about three lessons planned already, I'm struggling to find lessons that will keep the unit organized and sequential. So far, I've planned lessons where they create a family tree, one where they will organize a life timeline, and finally another where they bring in a photo from their family and write a story about the photo in particular. Where I need help is finding other fun, engaging lessons that helps them develop an autobiography. Thank you for any and all help! (keep in mind their homework will be mostly writing their autobiographies)

Sounds like a fun project. I like how you're incorporating visual literacy into the project by having them use narrative description in a picture. I love Carrie's comments below, but it may also help to check out some of the autobiography lessons on ShareMyLesson. I just went online and found a couple of great Powerpoints to kick off the unit. There are close to 300,000 lessons on this site, and many are exemplar lessons for the Common Core.
