Are you familiar with the Understanding by Design (UbD) framework? You can find great info in the Understanding by Design book, as well as doing a google search, along with "backwards design."
This might be helpful when creating your lesson plans within a common core framework. Another great resource is the teaching for understanding (TFU) framework developed by the Harvard School of Education (also a book and many resources available online.
