I use chants, especially with primary students, to emphasize ideas I want the kids to remember. They know there is a chant coming when I prompt them saying "Repeat after me..." For example, to help kids remember to compete and not be intimidated, they know to chant "You don't know...who's in the pool!"

To piggyback on what Kelly said, you can store your cheer cards in an empty box of Cheer detergent.

I think it's best to introduce attention getting cheers at the beginning of the year. I would do it on the first day. Practice it often until the students have it down and know what is expected of them. Your class will run smoother if your students know what to expect from the start and things are not changed over and over during the year.
