I think Katie Novak might be the expert on UBD, I think it is UBD, but when I plan lessons, I don't have one one philosophy or approach in mind. To limit what you do in class to one philosophy might be to the detriment of the students. There are always different approaches to take with different students to engage and have them learn better, but the overall process of instructional design should be based on best practices and be flexible enough for all learners. My lesson plans have not changed since school, and that was a long time ago. My lesson plan has 5 or 6 different core elements which tales minutes to prepare. Prepare for the lesson, not just for the lesson plan.

UbD lesson planning is "starting with the end in mind". You really need to think about where you want your students to "go" and "how" to get them there. Wiggins has a great "how to" template in this PDF: http://www.grantwiggins.org/documents/UbDQuikvue1005.pdf
Also, UbD is a framework. Eric, it probably includes those 5 or 6 important components that you include in your plans. It isn't telling teachers how to plan or what to teach, it simply makes sure that we include those really important components. Let me know if you have any questions!
