Question Detail

How long does it take to change a culture and attitudes from isolationist thinking to cooperative and collaborative? Two years? What can I do, personally, to take us from where we are to being THE BEST of schools, teams, teachers?

I'm a new K-5 math coach in a district that has never had a coach before - I was a 5th grade Gen Ed teacher for 8 years. Many people have been supportive and uplifting but not all. I have a lot of years of a difficult administration to overcome and loads of fears to expel. The new admins are wonderful and have a great long-term view for the district. I just seem to feel like a salmon swimming upstream.

I like what Michael Fullan says about having "impressive empathy." We have to be empathetic toward people who are not empathetic toward us if we want a positive culture. That's not easy--that is what makes it "impressive," but it is very important. I think his ideas apply to all culture change. We need to live out the respectful, growth-minded ideals we would like to see in the culture, and do our best to change culture one conversation at a time.
