Question Detail

How should poems be introduced to Junior school students?

Jun 5, 2015 12:55am

I have been trying to find interesting ways to introduce poetry to children. It is part of a unit in my syllabus which lasts about 3 weeks and the way it is presented in the books we are using is quite dry. I guess I was just wondering how does everyone introduce poetry, starting from very basic poems that first grade may read, for example about a frog!

I wish I could help a little more, but I am still a grad student. However, I will be teaching Middle School English, and I can't wait to teach poetry. One of my favorite classes was in 7th grade, when we learned about poetry. We had to write 3-5 different types of poems (limerick, acrostic, chinquapin, etc.) then we made them into "books" and illustrated the books! It's been over 16 years and I still remember (and have the book)...something I can't say for any of my other classes! You could even make it into group work!

Wish I could be more help! Good luck!
