How should teachers address teaching each common core standard?

Sep 9, 2013 7:23pm

I am a 5th grade ELA teacher and I would like to how teachers should be teaching the skills. For example...one text all skills/standards? different texts all skills/standards? Is it best to focus on one skill at a time meaning a every few days change the skill? I want to find the best way to teach the skills but to also assess and analyze their progress. It seems that teaching multiple skills all at once would make that difficult. Suggestions please.

For teaching, practicing, and reinforcing skills, teachers can address more than one standard at a time. In fact, the process of close reading uses many standards together. For assessment, I intentionally look for evidence of attainment of one or two skills/standards at a time. This makes assessment clearer for me and the students.

Thank you for the answer. I just want to make sure that I am teaching each standard correctly but at the same time see growth. I thought it would be a lot for the students to understand if I cangeskills every hour or every day without giving them a chance to practice it.

I am also concerned about mo into ring and tracking their progress so they can do well on post tests. What is a good way to track progress daily if you are possible doing three skills a day ...

I have students practice multiple skills every day, sometimes they are not even aware they are doing it, however choosing one standard to focus on for students to demonstrate and you to assess, even though they are practicing and demonstrating other standards, might be the most efficient way.

Oh okay it does make more sense to assess only one of to skills at a time. I am getting ready to start Tuck Everlasting with my students and I am really trying to decide which would be best to focus on. I want to do a pre assessment but am not sure if I should include an excerpt from Tuck or another literary text for the pre/post test.
