How to teach a novel? (1-2 short novels for the entire S.Y)

Jun 20, 2015 2:45am

Hi! I'm going to be a literature teacher for grades 4 - 5 this coming S.Y. the problem is I gave been assigned to teach only 1 - 2 short novels for the entire school year. Honestly, I have never taught a novel before. I've done dramas, short stories and poetry but I was never bound to teach just a specific literature. I currently feel lost.

Should I teach it just like I would a normal short story? chapter by chapter?
Is there a way for me to inject other kinds of literature when I teach a novel?
Please do share some strategies that you've used in teaching a novel.

You can find all kinds of teaching resources for novels on the internet, especially at teacherspayteachers. I just recently bought a huge unit for To Kill a Mockingbird. I like to create a packet for my students that we can use throughout the novel. We read it aloud in class because I can't count on my students to read chapters at home. I don't do activities with every single chapter.
