      Hi Jennifer-

Some of the Core standards could be addressed in an online discussion board. I have been teaching online college courses for a decade and there are very rich discussions that occur in these environments. Another option would be to set up a conference call, on a free site like so independent study students can practice their discussion skills in real-world context. Many business meetings are now held virtually, and rules of discussion still definitely apply.

      Hope this helps,
