Worksheets are useful, but not completely necessary. You could always have the students do group work, making tables and charts instead of just going through worksheets. That's just one idea, worksheets shouldn't be completely phased out but you don't need to use them all the time.

Congratulations! One thing that I do a lot of in my classroom is project based learning. When using this approach, you combine multiple subjects together to create multi-disciplinary projects and learning experiences that are both experiential for students and interesting for you.

Use of math manipulatives to help students participate in hands-on learning and self-discovery. It is also beneficial for kinesthetic learners. However, I love Jasmine's idea about project-based learning.

The best way to get away from worksheets is to just stop using them. Worksheets are easy but a thing of the past. Now you can use project based learning to get a better idea of what your students understand. If you use technology to its fullest it will benefit you, your students, and the world. The great thing about using project based assignments is your students can learn more than a textbook could teach them. The amount of tree's you will save will be amazing and the students will enjoy the projects more. Projects also give students more options to represent themselves and their knowledge in a way better suited to them. I will leave you with this thought: if your students do a worksheet they learn what is on that worksheet, if they do a project the boundaries are just their imagination.
