In my class I read aloud, The Starving Time, and we journal as if we too were there in Jamestown with Elizabeth. We take a European name (wearing a name tag each day and addressing one another by those names) and write about our experiences. The book is below 5th grade level but the information is at level and the students love it. Another teacher in our building uses a biography of Lewis and Clark in Reading class.
