As an Elementary Special Education teacher of grade five, but reading levels from grade 3 to 5, I have always been able to adjust or modify advanced skills to fit what ever grade I'm teaching. One strategy I used in reading worked exceptionally well. It was a lot of work on the front end, but worked well. First, I read all the books I wanted my students to read. I extracted the vocabulary I thought important, spelling words and word attack skills, and made up my own comprehension questions. However, what made it work was choosing books either about the same character (character study) , the same character on different reading levels, different books by the same author, or books on each students' level, but on the same subject, All students were able to participate in the discussions, and those students who usually had nothing to say, were chatter boxes. Each group made up their own questions to ask the other group during the discussion of the book. As the teacher, I used the, book to teach the elements of story and the comprehensions skills, of questioning, compare/contrast, retelling, monitoring, details, making connections, determining importance, setting etc.My students were able to transfer these skills to other books and areas of study.

We use Reading Plus, it is a software program that goes from Kindergarten through College levels. They take an assessment to start with and the software puts them where they need to be, it also goes up and down according to how well they are doing. We love it!! My special ed. students have shown a lot of improvement. Some students have raised a grade level or two this year.
