This is the first period students go to in the morning and about 5 minutes of this time is used fro the Pledge, moment of silence and announcements. I was a long term sub for the class I am now hired for so I did have an advisory class for the last 3 months of school. I tried to use it as a study period, grade check time for the students but it just never felt well done and often ended up with students talking to friends or playing on their phones. I would really like something more engaging, something they look forward too.

In order to help students feel like they are a valued part of your class and the school could you use this time to implement some type of service? With such a short time it could be very powerful to show them how with a little time they can make a big difference. I've also used this time to build vocab with merrriam webster's word of the day https://www.merriam-webster.com/word-of-the-day or have them do a googleaday to practice appropriate internet use / how to actually find things on the net that they are looking for http://www.agoogleaday.com/. Good luck!
