Question Detail

I have a substitute certificate in N.J. for grades K - 12. My question is when I substitute (especially for grades K - 5) and the teacher does not have lesson plans, how can I get through the day?

I would have folder full of ready to go material. I would make sure that your materials were applicable to certain grade bands as compared to grade specific. I would also make sure that the materials could be cross trained to allow for a thematic unit. One example is this NASA module (NASA and Jamestown):
It is intended for grades 5-8, requires no materials other than copies, and it also incorporates Math, Science, History, and ELA. One stop shopping!
