Question Detail

I have been getting lesson plans and demonstrations at high school level. I really need help at the elementary level. I need to see some common core ELA lesson plans and demonstrations for Kindergarten-first grade combo classes. How are teachers working at being effective in such situations? Thank you very much.

      Hi Marty,

I used to teach a mixed K/1 class and now teach a two year loop (kindergarten then first grade). One of the things that I've found to work in both situations is to use a lot of differentiation within the classroom. Between ages 5-7 there is a great deal of growth and learning that happens. Even within a kindergarten classroom, there is a huge range of abilities and needs.

Many concepts in K/1 can be taught whole group and then depending on the need of your students; can be differentiated within small groups. You can also split the class into two groups (again based on need vs. grade) to teach skills/concepts as needed.
