I need ideas for differentiated ASSESSMENTS to use in all academic areas for first grade.

This year I am focusing on differentiating assessments with my first graders for my annual evaluation. Everywhere I look on the topic, I only find differentiated instruction.

      I would take inventory of how individual students are learning, now. Some of them grasp new ideas through song, others with manipulatives, art, storytelling, etc.

      Next, take a single standard and focus on using three or four teaching methods like those mentioned above.
      Finally, use students' individual strengths to assess their learning. Since it's differentiated, portfolios should be kept for each child, sorted by learning standard.

      Remember to have tools such as a voice recorder, video, art supplies, and a camera to document the work.
      I would begin this process before an observation to show admins your process/progress.

        I like Jewel's idea even though it sounds like a lot to do but don't be afraid of that. The most difficult is that first initiative all the time so remember to pace yourself. And if you're finding this initiative too ambitious, do you have some latitude to change your mind with your admin?

          Hi Angie!

          This is a great question and a really tough one to answer. I think it is so tough for me to wrap my head around because I think the question can be the same and the more "differentiated" part would be in the student's solution path. For example, I could give the same question to a class of 1st graders and the way they solved it would be where I would get a clear picture of where they are in route to the standard. If I gave the problem 9 + 5, I could have students drawing pictures, others counting on, others using 9+1+4, all working toward the same problem. In this case, it is not the assessment question that changed by how each student solved it. So the differentiation is more the process than the end product.
