I always like to start with a little bit of writing. KQED Do Now has good writing prompts to project on the board. I’ve done several with my 10th Graders.
You may have to filter through them for your 8th grade, but they have a wide range of topics. I’ve also extended these into a longer writing assessment with awesome results!
